My Story

My name is Omar, I am a 30 something disabled man, born in Glasgow, and currently residing in Edinburgh with a slight Mancunian twang to my accent.

I love that “lightbulb”

moment that you get from participants when you’re in the middle of a training course and they suddenly get what you’ve been trying to convey in terms of a particular concept or message, that’s the moment I live for as a trainer.

Disabled since birth, I have Cerebral Palsy which affects my muscles and hence my mobility. Like many disabled people, life can be challenging. I have to be supported with simple daily living tasks, that under normal circumstances non-disabled people take for granted. This can include anything from assistance with personal care to support with going to the shops, days/nights out, going on holiday and everything in between.
I applied for Self- Directed Support. I chose a Direct Payment because I wanted to be in control of my support by employing personal assistants (PAs).
Having PAs has literally changed my life and enabled me to take the next steps in life including living independently with support and also work for a living. Simply put this gives me the freedom of choice and control to live life just like everyone else and that’s what disabled people want.
